February 03, 2012

The Bay County Sheriff’s Office issued a warning today about a telemarketing scam that is being used in this area.

A complaint was filed on February 2, 2012, by the intended victim of the scam. She told investigators she received a call on February 1, 2012, at about 6:50 pm. The man identified himself as a representative of The College Board in Tallahassee. He attempted to sell the woman a set of PSAT study CDs for $54 for the woman’s teenage daughter. The woman did not purchase anything and reported the incident to the BCSO.

Investigators called the telephone number that was recorded on woman’s caller ID machine and discovered it was the correct number for the Tallahassee Office of The College Board. However, the office closes at 5 pm eastern and employees of the office emphasized to investigators they have a policy prohibiting solicitation. Investigators believe the person running this scam has the ability to “spoof” a number, meaning they can cause the “correct” number of an organization to register on a caller ID machine even though in reality the call was placed from a totally different phone.

Another factor in this telemarketing scam has investigators very concerned. The man calling the woman knew many details about the woman’s daughter including her name, age, and what school she attended.

Anyone receiving a phone call purporting to be from the Tallahassee office of The College Board are reminded that The College Board will not make contact over the phone unless a call has been requested. Anyone wishing to file a complaint about this or any other scam can contact the Bay County Sheriff’s Office at 747-4700.
